Text and Potential
A potential are all the resources that are available in order to create a multi modal text also called an instantiation. There are elements chosen (or not chosen) from these potentials specifically to create staged, goal-oriented social process’ Martin 1992, p. 505' This week we decided on our text type of a garden. We wanted the garden to have a specific social purpose there for we decided it would be a medium sized park in the context of a CBD. The potentials chosen of size and location was chosen as we wanted the park to be functional to mainly to business people with limited time. Our park is their "haven" where they can relax, exercise, and be in touch with nature. For this reason , we chose an inventory of potential semiotics such as Gazebo, walking paths, running tracks, small football area, lake and bridge. I felt that with chosen potentials of a running track and football field mixed with elements of a walking path, lake, greenery, flowers and gazebo we achieved a dynamic text that for filed the parks purpose. We decided not to chose a large park but rather a medium size as we didnt want time poor business people to take a long time to get to the features of the park. We decided to also have it circular and not rectangular and we wanted it to be a unified space that is easily accessible. We also wanted the gazebo in the middle to be only accessable by walking over the bridge as this allows the visitor feels like they are in a different world. With our chosen meaning making potentials this park delivers an interactive and dynamic park that allows a time poor business people enrich their daily work life with not only relaxation and connection to nature but exercise and release whilst being easily accessable.
