Within a text, there are materials chosen that have particular social and cultural meanings. These meanings are connotations that we associate with them and they construe how the text should be used . This is so as "the qualities that distinguish one sign from another that give the sign meaning" (Lacey 1998). For example, our Gazebo (Centre) is made from timber, which is an an unprocessed building material. The word timber is associated with a "falling tree". This connotation gives the visitor a naturalistic experience as timber is s if the gazebo was spontaneously made from the trees surrounding the park. We also decided the running track to be mainly smooth cement but with pebbles to give it a rocky texture. This is much like the bark pathway which is used as it is low maintenance and organic. Through these materials, we understand that the maker of the park wants the visitor to have a naturalistic experience whilst being eco friendly and low maintenance. If we conducted a commutation test (Lacey 1998) and replaced the rocky cement with smooth cement, the runner may associate it with running in suburbia. This is so as smooth cement has a connotation to be used in suburban pathways..
